ASK YOUR REPRESENTATIVE TO SUPPORT THE GYMS ACT

On February 5, 2021, U.S. Reps. Mike Quigley (D-IL) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) filed the Gym Mitigation and Survival (GYMS) Act (H.R. 890) in response to the COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately impacting climbing facilities and other health or fitness facilities around the country.

The GYMS Act will create a $30 billion fund to provide grants to impacted businesses included in the law. Climbing facilities would be eligible for grants up to the lesser of 45% of the facility’s 2019 revenue or $20 million. Severely impacted businesses who have revenues of less than 33% compared to 2019 would be eligible for an additional grant of up to 25% of their initial grant. All grants are capped at $25 million.

The grant would cover expenses such as:

  • Payroll costs
  • Rent or mortgage payments, including interest
  • utilities
  • Facility improvement costs required by law or guidelines
  • Payments required for insurance on any insurance policy
  • Taxes
